On June 3, an overwhelming majority of Carlsbad voters made Carlsbad a charter city by voting yes on Proposition D.
Prior to the election, the newly formed Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee, or PAC, jumped into action and worked with the Associated Building Contractors of San Diego to send out mail pieces and automated telephone calls to garner support for the Charter City Measure.
Last April, the chamber's board of directors voted to support Prop. D. The PAC management committee, which is separate from the board of directors, also voted to actively support the Charter City Measure.
This was the second time in two elections that the chamber has used a PAC to advocate its stance on a local proposition. The chamber took a historical stance with its first-ever dabble into the crazy world of campaigns by defeating Proposition E, the so-called Save the Strawberry Fields initiative in 2006.
“The Carlsbad Chamber is the 10th largest chamber in California. It only makes sense for us to be active on ballot measures that affect business,” said Michael Babowal, the chamber's director of government affairs.
Last January, the chamber's board of directors voted unanimously to approve the formation of an issues-only PAC. Any member of the public can make a contribution to the PAC.
The names of those who make contributions under $100 are not published in the public record. For more information about the PAC or to make a contribution, call Babowal at (760) 931-8400, ext. 208 or e-mail him at [email protected].
