Don't clog up the sewer with holiday food!
The City of Carlsbad reminds residents to take care when disposing of greasy food scraps this holiday season, or risk expensive and messy sewer pipe backups.
Soap, detergents and bleach only temporarily cut the grease. Fat, oil and grease eventually attach to the walls of sewer pipes. Build up of grease in sewer pipes is the number one cause of sewage spills.
This holiday season, remember to dispose of fat, oil and grease properly. Here are some tips:
• Scrape uneaten food and sauces into the trash before washing the dishes or placing them in the dishwasher.
• Wipe cooking pan residue with a paper towel before washing and throw the towel in the trash.
• Mix small amounts of fat, oil and grease with absorbent waste such as kitty litter, coffee grounds or paper towels before discarding.
• Dispose of fat, oil and grease into a plastic container.
• Dispose of used cooking oil responsibly and free at a household hazardous waste facility. Call Waste Management at 760-929-9400 for information.
Homeowners are responsible for the sewer pipe from their homes to the street. Clogs in this pipe are costly to clear, especially after hours and on holidays.

Stay safe for the holidays
The holiday season is upon us and the City of Carlsbad Police Department is encouraging residents to have a safe holiday season by promoting home security.
Crime Prevention Specialist Jodee Sasway notes, "During the holidays we are out and about more shopping, at parties or attending family gatherings leaving our homes unoccupied and possibly vulnerable. Consider home security before you leave no matter how long you will be gone."
Reduce the opportunity for residential burglary by reviewing these tips:
• Secure all windows and doors no matter how long you will be gone
• Shut garage doors and park vehicles in the garage
• Trim landscaping to allow surveillance around your house and to prevent hiding
• Consider what can be seen through windows like gifts under a holiday tree, laptops, cameras or other valuables
• Light houses inside and out using timers or sensors, giving the appearance someone is home
•Lock-up valuables like laptops and jewelry
• Store common items like cameras in uncommon places
• Cable lock flat screen televisions and computers
• Engrave California Driver's License numbers on valuables like televisions, electronics and tools
• Record serial numbers for all items that have them and inventory the all property
• Tell trusted neighbors your will be out of town so they can watch your house
• Report suspicious activity 24 hours a day, when it is taking place by calling 760-931-2197
• Join Neighborhood Watch
