The Carlsbad City Council recently awarded grants totaling $40,000 as part of the Community Activity Grants program, which is designed to support groups that enhance the quality of life for Carlsbad residents and visitors.
In all, the council awarded grants in December to nine groups. The city received 12 applications seeking a total of $107,000 during last fall's application period.
The applications were reviewed by a seven-member citizens review committee, which made recommendations to the council on which grants to approve and specific funding amounts. Funding for the grants comes from the interest generated by a $1 million fund set aside by the council.
The grants are designed to provide enrichment programs for community members and are targeted at groups that are not eligible for funding under other city administered programs, such as Community Development Block Grants.
The applications were reviewed by the citizens committee in October and November.
The grants approved by the council include Assistance League North Coast, $5,000, Carlsbad Boy Scout Troop 748, $500, Carlsbad Educational Foundation, $4,000, Carlsbad Explorers, $11,000, Carlsbad Softball Association Junior Umpire Program, $2,500, Carlsbad Village Business Association, $3,500, Community Resource Center, $5,000, Mitchell Thorp Foundation, $3,500 and Phoenix House San Diego, $5,000.
This year's grant applications will be available in September. For more information about this program, call Judi Vincent at (760) 602-2430.
