During the month of February, 2010, employees for the City of Carlsbad participated in a fundraising campaign referred to as Big Dollar Hugs for Haiti. The intent of the employee-initiated campaign was to raise funds to assist with food and medical care for the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake.
Carlsbad employees raised a total of $3,720 to help with relief efforts within Haiti and decided to split the donation between two organizations to help provide both food and medical care. Funds were sent by the employees to the World Food Programme and Doctors without Borders to assist with their efforts to help the people of Haiti.
Rick Fisher, president of the Carlsbad Firefighters' Association expressed his concern for those affected by the earthquake.”The people of Haiti matter, and Carlsbad employees care. We are unable to physically hug the people of Haiti to provide comfort to them. But, we showed we cared through our big dollar hugs and our contributions to the World Food Programme and Doctors without Borders,” he said.
The Carlsbad employee groups came together to support this fundraiser campaign to help lift up the people of Haiti through their support. No city funds donated to this campaign, and the money raised came entirely from the employees themselves.
The employees ended their campaign March 1, and forwarded the proceeds directly to the World Food Programme and Doctors without Borders.
