Real estate agents Carlton and Sandy Lund, owners of The Lund Team and longtime members of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, have been selected as Carlsbad's 2007 Citizens of the Year.
Jeanne McFadden, who decades ago led a successful effort to pass a city growth-control ballot measure, also was selected as one of the Citizens of the Year. The Lund's and McFadden were honored Sept. 16 during a ceremony at City Hall.
Carlton, chief financial officer of the chamber, and his wife, Sandy, were nominated 11 times before finally receiving the award.
Carlton arrived in Carlsbad in 1972 and loved it so much he immediately bought a beachfront condo. A firm believer in community service and possessing a passion for keeping Carlsbad clean, Carlton became known as “Mr. Clean” for his years of cleaning up dog droppings and trash along the beach bluff walkway.
He joined the local real estate business in the 1980s. After marrying Sandy in 1984, the two began practicing real estate as The Lund Team.
The couple is known for their generosity to local nonprofit organizations. They've been big supporters of the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs, Hospice of the North Coast, Kids Are Worth a Million and North Coast Boy Scouts.
Carlton raised $5,000 for Kids Are Worth a Million by taking $51 worth of scrap metal from a detested waterfront sculpture that was torn down and cutting the metal bars into chunks of memorabilia, which he sold out of his trunk.
Carlton and Sandy contributed the first $100 to start Carlsbad Cares, the campaign to attract Legoland to Carlsbad, and both worked diligently to ensure that the park became a reality. They sponsored visits for 25 children with cancer on opening day.
A number of years ago, Sandy's lifesaving CPR skills earned her a commendation from President Bush after saving the life of baby.
In February, the Lund Team received the Green Technology Advocate Award from the chamber for their efforts to turn their real estate office into a green facility. Carlton continues to diligently support energy conservation.
