Shawnetta Grandberry, an Environmental Specialist for the City of Carlsbad Environmental Programs Division, recently received the prestigious John Fowler Scholarship from the San Diego State University Masters in Public Administration (MPA) program. The award, which is only given out to one MPA student per year, includes a $1,500 scholarship.

The award is named after John Fowler, who served as the City Manager of the City of San Diego for 30 years. The professional and business communities demonstrated their respect and appreciation for Fowler’s service by establishing a scholarship endowment in his honor and it was housed in the School of Public Administration and Urban Studies. This scholarship is competitive and any on-going MPA student is eligible to receive it. Recipients receive an award of either $1,000 or $1,500. To be considered, students must demonstrate strong academic performance and a commitment to the field of public and urban affairs.

Grandberry earned her Bachelor’s in Science from Grambling State University and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Public Administration at SDSU, where she expects to graduate in 2007. For more than 18 years, she has worked as a professional environmentalist. Previously Grandberry worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on a broad range of endangered species education programs. She has worked for the City of Carlsbad for the past four years.

In addition to her recent scholarship, Grandberry has been awarded the Women’s Environmental Council Scholar Award (Mar 2006) and the American Public Works Association Scholarship Award (Dec. 2005).
