The City of Carlsbad was one of 30 San Diego County companies named a 2006 Notable Company in San Diego's Best Workplaces Program, sponsored by San Diego's Best Workplaces Employers Group and San Diego Magazine.
The City won in the 500-plus employee category. All 30 companies, including the City, are listed in the September 2006 issue of San Diego Magazine. Additionally, an awards ceremony was held August 24 to honor the selected companies.

Carlsbad was one of only two public agencies to be named "Best Workplace." Another North County-based agency, Olivenhain Municipal Water District was the other. The City also is one of only two Carlsbad-based organizations to be recognized. The other is NAMM, the International Music Products Association

Carlsbad Human Resource Director Julie Clark says the award will be a great tool in recruiting potential employees.

"The survey results establish our presence as an excellent employer. The recognition will help us greatly in attracting and retaining high-caliber people to the organization."

The honorees were selected from some 325 companies that filled out an extensive application. From that group, 104 companies were selected as semi-finalists. The employees of those companies were sent an on-line survey. Approximately 175 of the City's 1,100 full-time and part-time employees were randomly invited to fill out an on-line survey in which they assessed key attributes of the City as a good employer.

Employees ranked the City above the average scores of participating companies in several categories. Among them: work-life balance, pay, benefits, training and opportunities for advancement.

Eighty-three percent or more of surveyed City employees agreed or strongly agreed that Carlsbad was a good place to work. Ninety-eight percent agreed or strongly agreed with the statements, "I would recommend this company to my friends" and "Taking everything into consideration, this is a good place to work."

Employers Group is part of a group of organizations that was founded in 1896 and provides services, such as training, compensation package design, a life/work balance program, risk management guidance, and legal information to employers. San Diego Magazine is a 60-year-old publication that is now part of the 15 titles of a Malibu-based publishing company, CurtCo Media Labs.
