Carlsbad walkers, hikers, runners and bikers can discover the city's 40-plus miles of trails through a new online, interactive trails map on the city Web site, www.carlsbadca.gov (click on “maps”).
The new online trail map shows aerial and birds-eye views of all of the trails in the Carlsbad's citywide trails system. The maps also provide directions, parking information and trail facts, including details about length, terrain and difficulty. All city trails allow leashed dogs.
“Many residents might not realize they have a city trail right in their own backyard,” said John Coates, the city's Parks & Recreation director. “With summer's longer days, it's the perfect time to get out and enjoy our beautiful city while getting some exercise.”
Preserving open space and promoting a healthy lifestyle are two of the values identified through Envision Carlsbad, a community-wide effort to establish a vision for the city's future. The city's trails program also connects some city neighborhoods to shopping areas. Creating a more walkable community was also an important value identified through the community vision.
In addition to enjoying the city's trail system for recreation, residents can volunteer to help maintain the trails. A new 'Adopt a Trail' program allows individuals, organizations and businesses to sponsor trail signage and maintenance costs.
“Our trails program is a great community partnership,” Coates said. “Public support means we can continue to make even more trails for everyone to enjoy.”
