Carlsbad is a coastal jewel with a rich past that glistens into the present.
Millions of people who visit Carlsbad can appreciate the contemporary and traditional blend seen throughout the city. This dichotomy can be enjoyed in everything from Carlsbad's architecture to its coastal splendor.
One such beauty of the past is Carlsbad Village's gazebo. With its white, shingled Victorian roof and lovely stylized supports, the gazebo has been the site of many weddings, birthday parties and community celebrations.
It was originally built to compliment the elegant Victorian mansion, previously called the Twin Inns, now known as the Ocean House.
Even though the gazebo was constructed in the early 1970s, the material used for creating its rooftop came from leftover wood used to construct the Twin Inns, which dates back to the turn of the century. Over the years, the gazebo was moved to make way for redevelopment, and unfortunately, time took its toll on the original structure.
John Simons, a developer with Anastasi Construction, with help from fellow Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotarians Kurt Burkhart, Robert Richardson, Mike Metts, Mike Pfankuch and Farrah Douglas, have helped save the gazebo. Together, they have done everything from compiling structural plans to beseeching the transportation board. The gazebo was scheduled to be demolished in October of 2007 to make way for transit center expansion in the Village.
The approximately $15,000 needed for materials, machinery and supplies to reconstruct the gazebo proved to be quite an undertaking. To raise money, the rotary club conceptualized a Walk of Honor.
This pathway will be composed of granite pavers leading up to and underneath the gazebo's rooftop. By selling these pavers, the small size for $100 and the large for $150, the club can raise the funding needed to make the necessary repairs to the gazebo.
These pavers, which will be engraved with family names and sentiment, will prove a beautiful testament and also allow those involved to be a vested part of Carlsbad's history. The Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club would like to invite you to become a permanent part of our Walk of Honor.
