The Sustainability Committee is comprised of Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce members who are interested in calculating the true costs and benefits of the triple bottom line, people, profits and the planet.
Acknowledge a changing world, the committee seeks to find and promote the appropriate balance between the economic, environmental and social aspects of the community to ensure sustainability for current and future generations. Barbara Hamilton serves as the chair, Jay Klopfenstein serves as the co-chair and Bev Jorgensen is the staff liaison.
Over the course of the past year, the committee has presented speakers and forums on a number of issues, including energy, water, waste and pollution prevention.
A subcommittee, the Green Certificate Task Force, accomplished an incredible goal of developing the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Green Business Certification Program. During this year, the Sustainability Committee is conducting meetings in a workshop format that focus on each of the categories of the Green Business Certificate.
The workshops, which are interesting and informative, allow chamber members to develop and expand sustainability programs within their businesses. Attend these upcoming workshops to learn how to meet the requirements to certify your business:
• Aug. 14, Community & Workplace Partnerships.
• Sept. 11, Energy Efficiency/Employee Practices.
• Oct. 9, Transportation.
The committee, which welcomes new members and workshop attendees, meets from 7 to 9 a.m. on the second Friday of each month at the chamber office, 5934 Priestly Drive. It will not meet this month, but will resume its normal schedule next month.
