The vision of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's Education Committee is to enhance the educational experiences in Carlsbad schools by linking academics, businesses and the community to promote real world learning, support partnerships and encourage and celebrate educational excellence in our schools.
The committee realizes how important it is to have partnerships with all levels of education, community agencies and local businesses to develop and support our schools for Carlsbad's future leaders. The committee receives monthly reports from Palomar College, Mira Costa College and Cal State San Marcos.
It also works hand in hand with community agencies such as the Carlsbad Educational Foundation, city of Carlsbad, Boys and Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, ArtSplash and Carlsbad Charitable Foundation.
The committee has had the pleasure of helping high school students in an academy program through mock interviews; some of these independent hard working interns have been hired by local businesses. Another area of focus is working closely with the Career Technical Education Program and the Regional Occupational Program at Carlsbad High School to build partnerships.
The committee has taken a leading role in helping every Carlsbad fifth grader attend Junior Achievement's BizTown, where students spend a full day trying on different careers and learn how each profession affects their communities.
An important event for the committee is the Outstanding Educational Program Awards Dinner, which takes place each year in May at the La Costa Resort and Spa. This special night recognizes teachers for remarkable programs they have created in their classrooms.
Local businesses, such as CDS Printing, La Costa Resort and Spa, Legoland California, Life Technologies Corp., NRG West, Carlsbad Energy Center, RAM Enterprises International, Sylvan Learning Center and Tri-City Medical Center, help this happen by sponsoring the special evening.
The committee meets from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month during the school year at the chamber, 5934 Priestly Drive. Business people who want to foster future learning are welcome to attend.
