The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's Government Affairs Committee monitors and acts on local, state and federal legislation.
The committee's mission is to represent the interests of the business community in local, state and federal legislative issues and to communicate those interests to members, the community and elected officials.
Kevin Sharrar of Prudential California Realty serves as chairman. Jim Brubaker of Brubaker & Associates serves as co-chair and David Lloyd of NRG West is the secretary.
The committee utilizes the chamber's Public Policy Guide, a compilation of policy statements approved by the chamber's governing board, as it considers issues important to chamber member companies. The guide also helps shape the discussions and ultimately helps the committee determine whether to recommend a position of support or opposition to the chamber board.
With the guide in hand, the committee works proactively on public policy issues to develop solutions beneficial to both business and the community. The members of the committee work to achieve success by developing and maintaining relationships with elected officials by providing them with critical information on business issues, and being a strong voice for member businesses at all levels of government.
The committee's goals this year are to:
• Expand periodic joint meetings between elected officials, the chamber board and the committee.
• Create public policy roundtables.
• Develop alliances with industry groups and other advocacy partners.
• Develop methods for broader and larger committee membership.
• Coordinate lobbying trips (as necessary) to Sacramento and Washington, DC.
The committee meets from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month at the chamber, 5934 Priestly Drive. Its staff liaison is Ted Owen, president and CEO of the chamber.
