Beginning this month all chamber members will begin receiving a new communications vehicle, an electronic news update from me. The new electronic publication is titled, "What Is Happening RIGHT Now."
The intent is to keep all of our members as fully aware as possible of the tidbits of news happening in and around the chamber. The e-publication is slated for the middle of each month. So, if your Carlsbad Business Journal comes out at the first of the month, then two weeks later the electronic update will arrive on your computer.
It is a document full of one-liners and nice-to-know information that wouldn't normally generate a full story in the Journal. These are around the water cooler stuff in many cases.
With the New Year already one month old it seems to me that the days are flying by faster than the runners in the Carlsbad Marathon. I do know that when you live in a utopian community like Carlsbad it is easy to lose the focus on your job. Looking out a window at the beautiful sunshine bouncing off your yard, watching citizens and visitors jogging by, walking and surfing at our beach, it is difficult to concentrate.
In John Maxwell's book, Success One Day At a Time, he focuses on, what he calls, his 'Seven Steps to Success'. I won't outline them in detail here, but they are worth considering. His book is a quick read and worth the time and expense to pick up a copy at your local book store.
l. Make a commitment to grow daily. Robert Browning once coined the phrase, "Why stay on earth except to grow."
Value the process more than events. Always strive for continual improvement.
Don't wait for inspiration. Basketball great Jerry West said, "You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days when you feel good."
Be willing to sacrifice pleasure for opportunity. In other words: Pay now and play later.
Dream big. When you think of limits you create them.
Plan your priorities. You never regain lost time, so make the most of every moment.
Give up to go up. Keep your eyes open for such moments?and always be sure to trade up, not down.
These seven are but brief statements, if you like them, go grab a copy of his book and flush them out. You will find they can greatly assist you in creating your own success.
Now for success with others, here are a few quotes for you to ponder and even use in your own communication with them.
–There is no such thing as an unimportant person, job or contact with a customer. If one employee wows the customer now and then, that's commendable. But if every single employee makes an effort to wow the customer every single time, that's a sales and service revolution.
–Listen carefully and your customers will explain your business to you.
–There has been an alarming increase in the number of things we know nothing about. The future belongs to those who learn things the fastest.
–Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
–Time invested in improving ourselves cuts down on time wasted in disapproving of others.
–When it gets right down to it, someone else may be signing your paycheck but you are the person who fills in the amount.
Have a great 2006.
