Family-operated Beach View Lodge has thrived for more than 40 years

Sitting across the street from Tamarack State Beach and at the edge of Carlsbad Village, the Best Western Plus Beach View Lodge is a cozy little hotel with a long tradition in Carlsbad. First opened in 1971, the Best Western is one of the longest continually-operating Best Western franchises in the country.

During that time, it has been in the hands of the same family, which also owns and operates the Beach Terrace Inn. The family has guided its evolution from a nondescript beach front building, to the impressive Craftsman design it now sports, complete with a Torrey Pine as its front anchor.

Like many Best Westerns, the clientele often arrives by car and is interested in using the hotel as a hub for local exploration.

"Best Western is a wildly recognizable brand, one that has a deep history rooted in the so-called 'Great American Road Trip,'" says Halei Young, the hotel's new general manager. "What it affords is instant name recognition and a perception of comfort, cleanliness and value, not just a bargain identification."

Young points out that Best Western recently divided the brand into three distinct tiers: Best Western, Best Western Plus and Best Western Premiere. "As a Best Western Plus, we are required to maintain higher standards than most brands in our competitive set would demand," she added. You'll notice that rooms at the Beach View Lodge feature upgraded beds, furniture and other comforting touches that are not found in other similar hotels.

Young is also proud that Best Western allows each independently-owned and operated hotel to capitalize on all of their unique advantages, location, product and customer loyalty.

For example, the Beach View Lodge has amazingly close proximity to the beach, complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi and newly decorated rooms filled with locally sourced art and accents.

"Our decorative tile comes from Oceanside Glass Tile, a local Carlsbad company. Our exterior facade was designed by Kip McBane and Associates, a Carlsbad firm. Even the photographs in our rooms are from Southern California." Young notes that buying local and domestic wherever possible was a huge priority for the hotel's ownership during recent property enhancements, including domestically made furniture and fabric.

The hotel's new rooms boast contemporary seaside colors, shutters, custom furniture, and granite. The hotel has 41 rooms ranging is size from 450 square feet to 800 square feet. Depending on the type, rooms have such unique features as ocean view balconies, fireplaces and family suites comprised of a bedroom, generous living room and a kitchenette. All rooms come with a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, flat screen television, free beach chair 'rental', and, of course, the opportunity for Best Western Rewards points for members.
