The City of Carlsbad is installing new streetlights and decorative lighting in the Village to showcase the neighborhood's many attractions and enhance the downtown experience for visitors.

The City Council approved the purchase on Tuesday, April 8, of 110 new decorative streetlight fixtures that illuminate walkways to heighten the pedestrian experience in the Village and make the area more vibrant. The new fixtures are equipped with light-emitting diodes, or LEDS, that use significantly less power than traditional light fixtures. This project will replace the older fixtures throughout the Village.

"I'm really excited about this project and the way Carlsbad is showcasing the Village as an attractive pedestrian environment," said Carlsbad Senior Traffic Engineer Doug Bilse. "The new fixtures we selected will save on energy costs and reduce our environmental footprint."

Four new light posts will be installed on State Street between Carlsbad Village Drive and Oak Avenue, where street lighting currently does not exist. The new lights will illuminate the entryway into the Barrio, the neighborhood south of the Village, and a public parking lot on State Street.

"This work coincides with a lighting study we are conducting in the Barrio to see how we can also make it more attractive and pedestrian friendly," Bilse said.
