Carlsbad Village has the potential to become the heartbeat of our city. Last year, the City of Carlsbad hired the former director of Mainstreet USA to conduct a year-long study of the Village. The goal was to help the community determine what it would take to make it a vibrant shopping and arts community. This presents exciting opportunities for the hundreds of small businesses and property owners in the Village. Following are some of the results of the surveys regarding our community and the Village:

1) Carlsbad is more affluent than other San Diego County communities
2) Homeownership is relatively high
3) At $22,718, the city's per capita retail sales are about twice those of the county, state and nation
4) 70 percent of Carlsbad Village businesses are service-related businesses
5) Approximately 11,300 people visit Carlsbad Village on a typical day and about 1/3 of them are out-of-town visitors.
6) Visitors would like improved business hours, business mix, parking, and prices for value perceived.

So what are the recommendations to make downtown Carlsbad into a vibrant arts, cultural and entertainment district? The answer lies in community members volunteering their time and efforts to make a difference. Following are some of the recommendations from the study:

1) Actively position Carlsbad Village as the center of arts activity in the city.
2) Set guidelines for business hours
3)Develop a downtown activities website
4) Develop one or two annual signature events
5) Animate storefront windows
6) Promote a new theatre to complement Carlsbad Village Theatre
7) Promote more locally owned restaurants
8) Add two or three screen movie theatre
9) Add a performance center
10)Add family entertainment such as an upscale bowling alley
11) Attract more custom-made/craft furniture, home furnishings, clothing, jewelry, paper products, toys/games, bicycle shops, vintage and unique eyeglass stores, vintage/refurbished/reengineered kitchen or car products, and a city store with logo merchandise.
