In an article about Carlsbad which appeared in last month's travel section of the San Francisco Chronicle, writer Jill K. Robinson perfectly described the reasons why our city is a fantastic vacation spot and a great place to live, work and play. This writer highlighted our history, beautiful natural resources and attractions. The article is a reminder for those of us who live, work and play in Carlsbad that we may sometimes take our own community for granted and forget to openly voice our appreciation for the great qualities and amenities of this wonderful spot.
Robinson wrote, “Beach cities abound in Southern California, sometimes seeming to blend together when it's not clear where one ends and the other begins. But Carlsbad, where many hotels, restaurants and shops are just steps from the sand and clustered around the downtown train station in Carlsbad Village, has the genuine feel of a small-town beach city in San Diego County. It's possible to park the car and hoof it from hotel to beach to lunch without getting blisters.”
Although not specifically identified as such, the Village area (downtown) was referred to several times within this article with highlights regarding its restaurants, stores and other attractions.
The following quote from Robinson highlights the value of the Village in creating the small-town, beach-city quality that is so desirable to many of our Carlsbad visitors as well as our residents:
“Even nature fans need a little downtime, however, and with a variety of restaurants (from Armenian to Mexican cuisine) and comfortable hotels that won't stretch your budget, Carlsbad is an ideal retreat for families or couples looking to simplify in style. Beach Boys music not required.”
The article offers a reminder and words of encouragement that we should continue to enhance the desirability of the Village in a manner that is organic in nature and that continues to protect the charm and the quaintness we adore. By honoring the natural beauty of the area and respecting its history, the Village can remain a unique and genuine small-town beach city while expanding the diversity of stores, restaurants and services that are so desirable to visitors as well as residents.
Spring is a great time to experience all that Carlsbad has to offer by spending some leisure hours eating, shopping and playing in the Village. The parking is free. The people are friendly. The small-town, beach-city feel of the Village is genuine. It is time for us all to experience the Village again with renewed appreciation. There are new businesses opening all the time, and continuing businesses that are just waiting to welcome you again.
