Xnergy is one of the fastest growing specialized construction companies in San Diego County.
The Carlsbad-based company provides engineering, design, construction and mechanical services for commercial and industrial facilities. Xnergy's specialty is building labs and other critical facilities for clients in the biotech, medical device manufacturing, pharmaceutical and other high-tech industries.
The Carlsbad Business Journal interviewed Jeff Gosselin, the president of Xnergy, about the company and the business of designing and building complex projects.
Carlsbad Business Journal: What is your professional background?
Gosselin: My first business venture began in 1981 as a solar energy company in San Diego. It evolved into a mechanical construction company and I sold it in 1996, along with most of my contemporaries, as consolidation moved through our industry.
CBJ: What is the company's background and history?
Gosselin: In 2001, my non-compete agreement from the sale of my former business expired. Jason Davis, who is now Xnergy's vice president of operations and principal, was managing a business in Orange County that was looking for an investor. After some lengthy discussions, we worked out a deal to purchase and spin out a division of the company that provided us with nine employees and one potential contract of $500,000 for Guidant, a medical device manufacturer in Temecula. We were awarded the project and have been recognized as one of San Diego's fastest growing companies ever since. We have positioned Xnergy as a nimble, mid-size company with the ability to make decisions and move resources around faster and more efficiently than our larger corporate brethren.
CBJ: What is the company's philosophy and mission?
Gosselin: We are dedicated to providing businesses with the highest quality construction, maintenance and customer service available in the industry. We believe in building long-term relationships with our customers and that our employees are the key to our success.
CBJ: What is unique about Xnergy?
Gosselin: We offer bundled services that provide experienced and qualified staff who can provide design, construction, commissioning and long-term service.
CBJ: What sets Xnergy apart from other construction companies?
Gosselin: Knowledge and experience with cGMP construction, FDA validation process, OSHPOD requirements, ISO standards and working relationships that enable our staff to navigate through the various owner and agency requirements. We have the ability to manage complex and sophisticated work for critical facilities. An experienced team, including our subcontractors and consultants, works to meet the challenges of completing the project on time and within budget.
CBJ: What projects does Xnergy have on the horizon?
Gosselin: One of the more interesting is a sustainable green-build design and construction project for the city of Encinitas that will reduce the city's energy usage and costs. The innovative project features a new, high-efficiency central plant and ice storage system to produce chilled water at night during off-peak rate hours. A 100 kilowatt Solar Photovoltaic, which converts sunlight into electricity, will operate during peak demand hours to provide most of the daytime lighting load. Other efficiency measures include a new cool roof system, standby generator and esthetic architectural features to enhance the ocean view from Encinitas' new modern library.

CBJ: What do you see for the future of this company?
Gosselin: We will continue to help our customers identify opportunity and a good return on investment for sensible green-build solutions. Our energy portfolio will continue to grow, but our core business will remain specialized construction. We will focus our growth in the San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties. We also will continue to identify and develop long-term partnerships as the key for our continued success.
CBJ: What is your greatest accomplishment in business?
Gosselin: Watching our team grow to meet challenges along the road. They have a quiet confidence because I know what needs to be done and they know how to do it.
CBJ: What other information would you like to share about the company?
Gosselin: We were recently notified that Xnergy is receiving the Best of the Best Award for Excellence from Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. for the Abbott Vascular Murrieta Site Expansion Project. Xnergy's award was for projects in the $10 million to $99 million Industrial Category. Last year, LG. Phillips LCD gave us their Premier Partner Award for design and construction of their America Service Center in Carlsbad, which includes 30,000 square feet of class 1000 and class 10,000 clean room manufacturing space. We have been recognized by the San Diego Business Journal as one of San Diego's 100 Fastest Growing Companies for the last three years in a row.
