What do a chainsaw, “dirty” pictures and recycled electronic components have in common? All three are part of art demonstrations that will take place during the seventh annual ArtSplash.
The free event returns to Carlsbad from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 26 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27. It is located on Armada Drive between Cannon and Palomar Airport roads.
The chainsaw will be wielded by James Lukinich, who will use it to fashion animals out of wood. The Alpine-based artist is an accomplished arborist who has carved out a unique niche creating one-of-a kind pieces, including a 6-foot gorilla he donated to a San Diego nonprofit that rescues unwanted and abused exotic cats.
“I have always seen little critters in the branches and knots in trees,” Lukinich said.
The “dirty” pictures will be created on a dusty vehicle by Texan Scott Wade, whose grimy car art put him on the road to national acclaim. With such quirky work as a Mona Lisa drawn on a Mini Cooper windshield, there is no telling what Wade will do at ArtSplash.
Wade attributes the popularity of his work to its transient nature. He said people are always fascinated with impermanent art.
Joey Chavez will construct a sea reef using recycled electronic components. Chavez has become well-known locally thanks to the bull he fashioned from old shoes that adorns his studio in downtown Oceanside.
“I am eager to show the public that one man's trash is another man's treasure.” Chavez said about his ArtSplash demonstration.
ArtSplash also will feature music, food vendors, a silent auction, a chalk art festival, hands-on art making opportunities for people of all ages and entertainment, including the Fern Street Circus from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Juried fine art vendors will offer unique items at reasonable prices.
Taste at ArtSplash will offer samplings of local cuisine from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday for $20 per ticket. Taste tickets can be purchased on-site.
Proceeds from ArtSplash benefit arts and music programs in North County schools.
“Supporting the schools is the prime reason for the event and for our organization,” said ArtSplash Chairwoman Joni Miringoff. “It is our joy to celebrate the creativity inherent in people of all ages and walks of life. The joy grows when we can use the proceeds to further music and arts programs that enrich the curriculum in local schools.”
