Reminiscent of an olden seaport eatery, Fish House Vera Cruz in Carlsbad offers guests a unique dining experience. With etched glass windows, ship-themed decorations and fish covering the walls, the restaurant boasts multiple oversized fish tanks for guests to enjoy while dining.
Located on Carlsbad Village Drive, Fish House is located just blocks from the ocean, in the heart of Carlsbad Village. The restaurant, which opened in 1992, has sister locations in San Marcos and Temecula.
"People just seem to come here and really enjoy the feel of the restaurant," said Art Garcia, general manager of the Carlsbad location.
But it is more than the atmosphere that draws new customers every day, and keeps regulars coming back; the food at Fish House attracts fish lovers from near and far. A smorgasbord of fresh choices, Fish House boasts an extensive menu that includes everything from traditional dishes such as shrimp on a skewer to exotic combinations like the Cajun kabob.
"What makes us so popular is we do have a wide selection of fresh and frozen fish," Garcia said.
In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant has a second menu listing the day's fresh fish.
For Sandra Taylor, the drive from San Diego is well worth it to enjoy her favorite fish dishes.
"(The food) is just the best anywhere," said Taylor, who recommends diners try the restaurant's halibut and grilled prawns.
For a delicious dining experience, start your meal with an appetizer such as the Vera Cruz shrimp cocktail, a Mexican-style cocktail with a "kick", or the Sourdough Rockefeller Bread, a slab of bread grilled with spinach and parmesan mixture on top.
When you are ready for the main course, Garcia recommends ordering the restaurant's combination fish kabob, which changes daily with the fresh fish available. The meal is served with a choice of green salad, cole slaw, tomatoes, rice pilaf, vegetable or roman potatoes, which are twice-baked with Romano cheese.
All fish is mesquite grilled at the restaurant and inquiring minds can watch their dinner as it cooks through a window into the kitchen. Garcia also recommends mussels, butterfish, and wild salmon.
Fish House also serves Manhattan and Boston-style clam chowder. For those who do not speak chowder language, Boston chowder is white and Manhattan chowder is red.
Garcia said that in addition to the restaurant's great seafood, the service is what keeps patrons coming back.
"The service is top-rate," he said.
But if dining in is not on the menu, Fish House has a fish market in-house that sells fresh and frozen fish.
