More than 90,000 people live and work in Carlsbad, and take tremendous pride in its growth and wellbeing.
The area is one of the most desirable destinations on earth and lures people from around the world. With growth, though, come challenges and a wide range of needs in the areas of social, educational and community services.
For a city to thrive, as Carlsbad has done, it needs an extraordinary commitment from individuals to support the numerous community-based nonprofit organizations providing programs and services that benefit residents. In today's economic environment, that support is more important than ever.
“Many of these organizations rely heavily on government funding, combined with the kindness and generosity of individuals, to maintain their missions and levels of service,” said Yvonne Murchison Finocchiaro, chairwoman of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation's board of directors.
The federal government has reduced funding sources. While California continues to stay afloat, it has slashed the budget and reduced support to essential social, community service and educational programs.
“The challenges are real, and an increased emphasis falls on individuals to step forward in the spirit of philanthropy to help organizations meet the needs of the community,” Murchison Finocchiaro said.
It was this climate of challenge, and truly in the spirit of community support and wellbeing, that the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation was founded in 2007. In proud affiliation with the San Diego Foundation, its mission is to advance philanthropy in Carlsbad in order to build community excellence, stimulate innovation and enhance the capacity of nonprofits.
“We had a successful launch, but there is so much more we need to accomplish,” Murchison Finocchiaro said.
She pointed out that the foundation has raised more than $500,000 in contributions and commitments to benefit Carlsbad charitable causes.
“We've created a long-term Carlsbad Community Endowment of more than $185,000 and made nearly $100,000 in grants to deserving Carlsbad organizations and programs,” Murchison Finocchiaro said.
Most recently, the foundation received a $25,000 matching grant from the Carlsbad-based Leichtag Family Foundation to incentivize memberships and support continued philanthropic activities in the Carlsbad community. The grant-matching deadline is Dec. 31.
Businesses and individuals making a five-year commitment of $1,000 per year to the foundation by Dec. 31 will see their positive impact on the community doubled as their first-year contribution is matched by the Leichtag Family Foundation.
“The generous matching grant will help us meet our goal of welcoming at least 25 new members to our foundation,” Murchison Finocchiaro said. “The Leichtag Family Foundation has garnered an exemplary history of visionary philanthropy in Carlsbad, throughout the San Diego region and internationally. We are delighted to partner with it in making an impact on causes that are important to Carlsbad residents.”
The foundation's 2009-10 charitable focus will be on Civil Society: Building a Better Carlsbad, Together. The foundation supports projects that benefit Carlsbad by enhancing its identity, supporting its residents and fostering a unifying sense of community and purpose
“The intent is to support activities and programs that inspire Carlsbad residents to make a positive difference in the future of our city,” Murchison Finocchiaro said. “There simply is no better time to become a member of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation.”
Please note that this issue of the Carlsbad Business Journal contains a membership envelope provided by the foundation that individuals are encouraged to fill out and submit to the foundation.
