For those of you who, having experienced the fine Italian cuisine of Fresco Trattoria in downtown Carlsbad, have hoped for a second location, you're in luck. Fresco's of Carlsbad is set to open a second home, Fresco Trattoria of La Costa.
Owner, Leone D'Arcangelo, founded what is now Fresco Trattoria of Carlsbad in 1999. The restaurant was first known as Tiberius Antro (The Emperor's House) but the name was not easy to remember. So, three years ago it was changed.

Originally from Sperlonga, Italy, D'Arcangelo was a chef in the Navy as well as several restaurants in Italy. When he and his family came to the United States and visited Carlsbad he fell in love with the location. He said it was largely due to the fact that this fair city mirrored his hometown, a beachfront settlement with aesthetically pleasing architecture.

"This is like my home," says D'Arcangelo in a thick Italian accent. A mural of his village in Italy adorns a side wall of the dining area; he motions to it as he speaks. "I love to cook. I am chef here and cooking is in my family."

To duplicate the authenticity of an Italian beachfront villa, Fresco's made its home right near the water in the heart of downtown Carlsbad's village; there it has enjoyed six years of success. It is only apropos that the fine Italian dining establishment open a second location.

"We plan to have a total of five restaurants in Southern California," says Kharron Reid, a Fresco Trattoria employee. "The next one, which will be our third, will open in Point Loma."

The Point Loma restaurant should see a debut as early as spring 2007 to as late as the fall of 2007.

As for the new Fresco's La Costa, located on the corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Camino de Los Coches, the 2,200 square foot bistro will be open sometime in February of this year. The venue will be smaller, more personal, with an intimate dining area and patio seating. Only wine and beer will be offered as opposed to the full bar that the downtown Carlsbad restaurant provides.

The current restaurant employs around 20 people; the new location will see a staff of approximately 12. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Fresco's La Costa will be whetting the appetites of many locals in that area.

If you haven't tried Fresco's and can't wait for the new location to open, visit them in Carlsbad at 264 Carlsbad Village Drive or give them a call at (760) 720-3737.
