With the midterm elections behind us, the business community can adjust to the relative certainty and calm that comes from the chaotic pre-election rhetoric as new office holders dig into the work of government that has been piling up. We can hope that confidence in a relatively free market economy will create enthusiasm for business growth during the next eighteen months before it all starts over again. The one message that has resonated in the recent political debate is that good government policy creates space for business to thrive and grow. Jobs are created in the private sector. Policy makers hopefully heard the concern about the need for certainty in the rules of the road for lending and borrowing, compliance assistance and meaningful incentives from agencies tasked with protection of the environment and wise use of scare resources, and provision of reasonably priced health care for our families without endless red tape.
Your Chamber of Commerce will continue to coordinate and lead in efforts to advance business growth. Stay active in Chamber committees and events, and send employees as well (chamber member employees are also “members” and are welcome to participate). Economic development will get a boost from the turnabout in the attitude of government policy makers. The uncertainty of the past several quarters will be behind us now. Growth and prosperity are the hallmark of American ingenuity, we still have a can-do attitude that will avoid stagnation that grips some of the world economies.
The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Chamber will continue to invite members to suggest areas of legislation or regulation that the Chamber should support or oppose. While not every idea is adopted, it is the Chamber's goal to give fair hearing to all legitimate business concerns. Your Chamber will continue to sponsor or support events where policy makers are invited to participate. Green jobs were widely touted by candidates; the Chamber's Sustainability Committee provides a collegial forum for developing this exciting area of opportunity.
