John Haedrich, proprietor and owner of Tip Top Meats and European Deli in Carlsbad, had a vision for his business. Tip Top combines a thriving meat market, restaurant and European market/deli, and Haedrich had myriad reasons to count his business as a success. His personal narrative of immigrating to the United States following WWII speaks to his immigrant's faith in the American Dream. “Here in America, everything is possible,” Haedrich said of his market's prosperous ascendancy. “I have the patronage of great customers and I work with great employees.”
But Haedrich is the type of forward-thinking business person who never stops looking for ways to improve. With that vibrant attitude, he took on the task of fine-tuning his business to be more sustainable, greener and more energy efficient. A solar panel system would help cut costs, help curb greenhouse emissions and would add to the value of his business. “I have the opportunity to do something great for my business and provide a good example to other Carlsbad businesses at the same time,” he said. “This is progress!”
It was also very important to Haedrich that he use a local company for his solar panel system. Toward that end, Haedrich sought the expertise of Carlsbad's Gecko Logic USA.
The decision to install a solar panel system on to the landmark Tip Top Meats had to factor in the unique, eye-catching architecture of the building as well as Haedrich's exacting standards. “I had a vision of how I wanted the system to work and how it had to look,” Haedrich said. “I designed the system to work harmoniously with the building.” His vision included a custom-built awning system added on to the building that incorporated the panels. The result is a system that makes the most of the Tip Top Meats building's elevations while making a significant impact on the building's energy efficiency.
Because Gecko Logic USA is both a solar installation company as well as one of the few installers that manufacturers PV components, including modules and monitoring system, the Carlsbad company seemed to be the best fit for Haedrich's specifications and vision. Gecko provides a custom-designed solar solution for each project, and they stay with each client for the life of the system, offering maintenance, support, and overseeing any future growth.
According to Georg Eversheim, managing director of GeckoLogic USA, Tip Top Meats would benefit from a long-term solar partner. “We could provide Tip Top Meats a strong local presence as well as the expertise that comes from our foundation of keen engineering acumen in both system and product design,” he said.
Eversheim and his team worked with Haedrich to create the exact system that the meat market proprietor envisioned. “John was great to work with,” he said. “He knew what he wanted and he had a great sense of how this all works.”
Haedrich knew that energy efficiency was merely one benefit of installing the custom solar system. “This is for Carlsbad,” he said, expansively. “I can demonstrate for other local businesses that even though we are in a recession, it will always pay to invest in your business and in the community as well!” Haedrich feels a great sense of responsibility to his community and its future. “No matter what: Hard times — good times — we have to be responsible for the future. Going green is an investment in the future of Carlsbad. It is about respect for our earth and our community.”
Eversheim concurred. “This will not only help ensure that Tip Top's energy costs remain constant, but the special installation ensures an appreciation of the company's value,” he said. Eversheim estimates that the energy savings is about $9,350 annually, and the CO2 gasses saved from the atmosphere is about 22 tons a year.
In the end, going green means saving green, too.
