Who would have thought that in 2009 we would be watching videos on something as small as a watch? Maybe Dick Tracy, and also the millions of Americans who view online video every day.
More than 71 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience view videos online, according to ComScore, a company that measures these sorts of things. That translates into billions of clips viewed in any given month.
The most encouraging news from a recent study is that seven of 10 respondents ranging in age from 18 to 65 sought out viewing content online. It is certainly a golden opportunity for those providing content.
Chris Swanner, a partner in Sports Motion Inc., said their online video has been the biggest factor in increased product sales. Swanner and his partner, Jay Lombeck, are typical of the thousands of business owners who recognize the niche value offered through Internet video viewing.
Another example of a business that puts online video to work is Harold deWall's Mudmaster. He wanted to let his video answer the preliminary questions that his contractor clients asked about his unique product. His Web site provides that solution and has allowed him to concentrate on other aspects of the business.
These companies and thousands like them use the Internet as a way to market products and services. This has not become the exclusive means to do so, but an extension of the business.
Because the Web viewer selects the video, they are in a ready mindset to accept its message.
The growth of video viewing is attributable to several factors, which include a paradigm shift from how marketing used to be done, according to an ABI Research study. ABI also reports that the number of people watching online video has nearly doubled over the past year, going from 32 percent a year ago to 63 percent today.
“It's getting to be unusual not to find a video component on a site,” YouTube CEO Chad Hurley recently said.
One has to look no further than the Carlsbad Chamber's own Web site as a prime example.
If you're prospecting for new and better business, and more of it, take heart. There is indeed gold awaiting your discovery.
