For the many North County residents who commute to points south for work or school, four lanes are just not enough. Predictably, weekday mornings find commuters backed up on the Interstate 5 onramps from Oceanside to past Del Mar. Carlsbad residents in particular face gridlock on the much-used Poinsettia and Canon Road onramps.
Caltrans and the United States Department of Transportation have released a set of I-5 expansion reports that outline several options for widening the freeway (and one option for taking no action at all). The reports analyze how the various options for widening I-5 would affect not only the traffic, but the wildlife and water along the proposed stretch from Oceanside to La Jolla.
The impact reports are available for public examination either by accessing online at www.KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/I-5-intro.html or by visiting the
Caltrans District 11 office in San Diego. They are also available at the Carlsbad Library branches.
The proposed project began with public discussions and workshops all over North County as far back as 2004. The largest of the expansion options would add six lanes. The smallest would create four new lanes. Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration also studied the option of leaving I-5 unchanged. Each expansion plan calls for building the freeway within a freeway on I-5, much like the one constructed between Miramar and Escondido. Each would add a minimum of four express lanes for car pools, buses and designated fuel-efficient cars.
The coastal freeway currently has four lanes on each side for much of its North County stretch.
Carlsbad residents are urged to stay abreast of the proposed widening projects by attending one of the four community forums being held in August and September:
