Two thousand dollars to raise a monitor, $1,600 for a new mouse and $1,200 to "fix" a broken chair which an employee did not know how to adjust.
In these cases, the employees had to file worker's compensation claims because their employers did not have a mechanism to assess the workstation. Often the costs of a worker's compensation claim are tied to the level of employee frustration in getting an ergonomic assessment or changes to the workstation rather than to the severity of the injury.
Ergonomics is the combination of industrial engineering, interior design, and kinesiology (the study of movement) to create a functional work environment. A functional work environment is one that maximizes productivity and minimizes the risk of injury.
An ergonomic assessment creates a functional work environment by defining the requirements of a job and the physical needs of the employee. In most cases adjustments to current equipment and employee training about workstation organization are all that is needed. An assessment also provides information about equipment to adapt the workstation to the needs of the employee.
Give Something Back Business Products works closely with Site Solutions throughout California to provide equipment to maximize productivity and minimize the risk of injury in the work place. Site Solutions' network of physical and occupational therapists provide on site ergonomic assessments as well as employee and management training in ergonomics.
