The Carlsbad Business Journal interviewed Danny DeMichele, the president and CEO of eVisibility, about the firm and the business of selling customized marketing solutions.
Carlsbad Business Journal: Who comprises the executive staff at eVisibility?
DeMichele: Myself; Tom Tople, chief operating officer; Cary Johnson, vice president of sales and Miguel Salcido, director of product development.
CBJ: What is the professional background of the executive staff at eVisibility?
DeMichele: We come from a long line of Internet start ups. I started an online nutrition company in 1996 that I eventually sold. I was quick to realize that we were very good at marketing online and just OK at selling nutritional products. Our management team at eVisibility has more than 200 years of combined online experience. We have all seen, tried and tested just about every phase of e-business, which is why I believe eVisibility can perform better than other companies.
CBJ: What is the company's background and history?
DeMichele: I had a handful of web-based businesses in the mid to late 90s that were successfully marketed online. Toward the end of the 90s, search engines were getting smarter and more sophisticated, and we quickly discovered our ability to market very aggressively, with minimal risk. We could get other online organizations to achieve the same positive return on investment we had. When we started, there where only two ways to market online: banners on Web sites and e-mails. Neither of which worked very well. We had the formula to get Web sites to the top of search engines in a very cost-effective and timely manner, so we started what was then the 5th search engine optimization company in existence. We were in business before Google was created.
CBJ: What is the company's philosophy?
DeMichele: We sell customized marketing solutions only if we are certain our clients will achieve a positive return on investment within a very quick timeframe. We will not bring on clients if we do not believe in their product or service, or its ability to be successful online.
CBJ: What is unique about eVisibility?
DeMichele: Our willingness to form a contract where we only win if our client wins. We are one of a very small handful of companies truly willing to put our money where our mouth is by offering performance-based contracts. If we do a great job for our clients, we make money. If we fail for our clients, we lose money.
CBJ: What sets eVisibility apart from other Internet marketing firms?
DeMichele: We set true expectations for our clients. In most instances, you are competing with tens of millions of Web pages to get a position on the coveted first page of a search engine for a particular keyword query. Not all Web sites will get to the top of the list. New Web sites have a hard time competing with old ones. We tell it how it is. Before we bring any client on, we make sure we can achieve first page rankings. Otherwise, we will not bring them on.
CBJ: What is the most challenging aspect of this company?
DeMichele: Preaching the real gospel of search engine marketing and what is achievable. There are many companies out there setting an improper expectation of what is and is not realistic. They make it sound like there is a magic wand that you wave over a Web site and it gets placement, which is not the case. The problem is that the customer is going to believe the better sales person. All too many times we get clients who come back after realizing the firm they went with did not do what they said they would. We stick to our guns and set a proper expectation of what is achievable.
CBJ: What do you enjoy most about your position?
DeMichele: I just love the talented people that I work with everyday. Being 31, I am a senior citizen in the office. I get new guys and girls in here who are 20 years old and show me what is what. It is so much fun.
CBJ: What is your greatest accomplishment in business?
DeMichele: My greatest accomplishment has to be building what I feel is the greatest online marketing team around. Everyday, I see huge wins for our clients. To start with one person and watch it grow into its own living, breathing company is by far the biggest accomplishment. A close No. 2 was winning the McDonalds Angus Burger campaign. It was a fun project and we delivered 10 times the expectation that was set. As a result, we won several other McDonalds product accounts.
CBJ: What do you see for the future of eVisibility?
DeMichele: We will continue to shape the way that online marketing is conducted. We have been a leader in change and we will continue to push the envelope and keep our industry out of its comfort zone. We will continue to challenge our clients on what is achievable. I see us being the largest online marketing conglomerate in five years by building strong relationships with large, traditional advertising agencies. Watch out.
