Invitrogen Corp. purchases BioSource International
Carlsbad-based Invitrogen Corp. has purchased Camarillo-based BioSource International for $130 million. The purchase is expected to be complete by the end of the year and will give Invitrogen more products in the fields of proteomics (the study of proteins) and antibodies. Invitrogen does not develop drugs but provides the tools necessary for biomedical research. It is the most highly valued public company headquartered in North County and employs 1,200 employees in Carlsbad and 4,500 employees nationally. Invitrogen ended the first quarter of 2005 earning $47 million. At press time there was no information available on where BioSource's 240 employees would wind up.
