The Carlsbad Unified School District is in the business of helping students achieve and succeed, in school and beyond.
As other proactive organizations do, we define goals and set measurable objectives.
Each spring, our board of trustees conducts a process intended to help every student improve. We discuss how best to achieve our overarching goal: Every student makes significant yearly progress toward achieving appropriate and meaningful standards.
“The process enables our staff to understand and adhere to the board's nucleus in support of student learning,” said Board President Nicole Pappas. “It is based upon SMART goals proven in many industries. Each success indicator is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.”
The district has developed ambitious 2009-10 success indicators in 10 important areas, ranging from subject matters and personnel performance to facilities and safety. We take great care in formulating measurable indicators, with a focus on continual improvement.
In math, we intend that 95 percent of eighth graders will be enrolled in algebra or above. In English language arts, that the percentage of students scoring proficient or above on the California Standards Test will be at least 56.4 percent.
College readiness is key
One of our most ambitious strategies involves increasing the college and career readiness of graduates. Although Carlsbad Unified boasts one of the highest graduation rates in San Diego County, nearly 95 percent, we recognize the need to prepare all students to meet the workforce demands of our fast-changing, increasingly high-tech global economy.
Currently, 59 percent of CUSD graduates have completed the rigorous “A to G” requirements that demonstrate a student has attained essential critical thinking and study skills in seven areas needed for admission to the state university system. We will aggressively strive to increase the percentage of graduates successfully completing A to G requirements over the next several years to 65 percent in 2009-10 and 90 percent by 2014.
We plan to attain this objective, in part, by increasing the breadth of classes that meet requirements and encouraging all students to consider taking them.
Our students will navigate a future unlike our past. They will need to be versatile and creative, as will the educators who prepare them to excel. This is not simply good teaching and learning, it is downright SMART.
