Like the Carlsbad Chamber, city and community, the Carlsbad Unified School District is environmentally conscientious. We strive to be proactively green, at school sites and district-wide.
Last spring, Magnolia Elementary parents, led by mom Susie Gordon, turned their mother-son event into an environmental celebration. The event involved community groups, such as the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, Boy Scout Troop 748 and the Vector Control Program.
Moms and sons learned about the environment while creating recycled art and enjoying educational activities. From apparel to decorations to displays, the evening was brightly green.
“We wanted the event to be not just eco-friendly, but fun,” Gordon said. It was!
A culture of conservation
The district is at the forefront of energy and water conservation. Our intent is to create a culture that will save money, jobs, programs and the environment.
The effort was initiated by our board of trustees, which is in the process of approving energy and water conservation policies and guidelines.
We believe that we are the only school district in North County developing a formal energy conservation education program. We are striving to save more than $400,000 in electricity, gas and water costs over the next two years alone by reducing energy and water usage by 27 percent.
Over the years, the program will continue to save significant funds for education. Currently, we are:
• Implementing centrally-controlled software that ensures all 3,000 computers are turned off after hours.
• Adhering to mandatory water use restrictions.
• Programming HVAC systems to shut off when school sites are unoccupied.
• Creating an educational awareness program to keep staff informed and motivated.
If you'd like to join our conservation efforts, I invite you to visit a Web site area reserved specifically for our district community. Log on to www.mygreenquest.com/carlsbadusdca to track your home's electricity, gas and water consumption.
Together, we can create a greener future.
