$5 million gift supports expansion at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas
Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas has received a $5 million gift from a charitable Rancho Santa Fe family. The anonymous gift supports The Campaign for Scripps Encinitas, a multi-year capital campaign to raise funds for the expansion of the nonprofit hospital's emergency and medical/surgical services. With this donation, more than $25 million has been raised to fund the expansion effort.

"Thanks to generous donors, Scripps can strengthen its mission through expanding facilities and servicing the growing health care needs of our communities," said Carl Etter, Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas chief executive. "We are excited to pursue a state-of-the-art emergency department; and this gift helps put us within reach of our capital campaign goal."

The largest expansion effort in several decades is under way at Scripps Encinitas to better serve North County residents. The project consists of a new two-story, 60,000-square-foot critical care building that will include a 27-station emergency department, more than twice the number of beds currently on the unit. A second floor will house 36 private acute care beds to increase inpatient capacity. An additional medical office building and acute care building will also be part of the campus build out over the next decade.

Recently, the hospital opened its new 884-stall parking garage to prepare for the increase in patients and families on the campus. Construction on the new emergency department is expected to start as early as 2012.

"Philanthropy is critical to the future of Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas," said John Engle, chief development officer, Scripps Health Foundation. "We are grateful to this family for their leadership, and hope their generosity will continue to inspire others in the community to support our expansion effort."

Pacific Ridge School continues its dynamic expansion with Athletic Center
Pacific Ridge School has reached a new milestone in its plans for campus expansion: the groundbreaking of its Athletic Center. The Carlsbad non-profit, independent school, which opened in 2007 and includes grades 7-12, reached this goal early thanks to the tremendous success of Phase One of its Breaking New Ground Campaign and the early completion of the High School building last September.

The 35,236 sq. foot Athletic Center will be one of the largest and most state-of-the-art high school athletic centers in the county. Construction will begin in April and will include three regulation basketball courts, a training room, dance/yoga studio, state-of-the-art weight and conditioning room, coaches' offices, locker rooms and showers, kitchenette for concessions, bleachers capable of seating 500 fans, and an outdoor viewing deck of the Astroturf field. The lobby will also act as a Hall of Fame, showcasing trophies for athletic, academic, and arts achievements.

Most importantly, the facility will give Pacific Ridge a "home" for athletics, according to Athletic Director Darren Lawlor. "More than 80 percent of Pacific Ridge School students play one or more sports, which is a real tribute to the Pacific Ridge School community, including our coaches, faculty, staff, parents, and supporters. This new Athletic Center will enable Pacific Ridge School to continue developing well-rounded students in academics, sports, community service and the arts."

Together, the middle and high schools offer 12 sports and 43 teams, ranging from basketball, volleyball, flag football, and lacrosse, to cross country, soccer, tennis and, most recently, golf. Since its opening in 2007, Pacific Ridge has had six undefeated seasons, competed in regional and state playoffs, and brought home seven championship trophies. This year, Pacific Ridge School became a member of the Coastal Conference, one of the most competitive independent high school leagues in the state. Pacific Ridge School was also the first school in San Diego County to adopt the Positive Coaching Alliance, a program out of Stanford University which develops an "Honor the Game" culture amongst students, parents, and coaches within the school community.

Waterworks Aquatics opens for all ages
Waterworks Aquatics, is proud to present itself to the City of Carlsbad and all of North San Diego County with a newly built 8,700 square foot indoor swim facility at 2704 Gateway Road.

Waterworks held its Grand Opening Ceremony on Saturday, May 7th. The event included food, beverages, and water activities for the entire family to enjoy.

California is one of 10 states in which drowning is the leading cause of death for children under 15 years of age. In an effort to reduce this statistic and promote water safety, Waterworks Aquatics teaches more than 5,000 children to swim each year. The new Carlsbad location will provide an additional venue where its successes can be shared in the San Diego County area by providing swimming lessons year round.

Waterworks Aquatics provides Private, Semi-Private, Parent and Me, Adult and Stroke Clinic swim classes. It will also offer youth swim teams, summer swim camps, lap swimming, masters swim team, water aerobics, and a venue for birthday parties as well as facilitating aquatic therapy.

"The teaching methodology at Waterworks Aquatics is what differentiates us from other swim schools," said Jon Alpert, founder of Waterworks Aquatics. "We utilize an original instructional philosophy of teaching children to roll to their back for a breath rather than lifting their heads to breathe, which allows children as young as 18 months the capability to swim across the pool. The other key component is the use of a specialized muscle memory teaching technique, where students are taught stroke technique at a very young age."

Grammy Award-winning artist to play for youth benefit on May 13
Learning Forum International (LFI) will feature a youth benefit concert by Grammy Award-winning artist Freddie RavelFriday, May 13.

The concert will take place from 7:30 to 9:00 pm at the QLN Campus, 1938 Avenida del Oro, with a VIP reception from 9:00, 10:00 pm.

Money raised will go reaching more children through families and schools with LFI's Excellence Effect Movement. The Excellence Effect Movement uses the 8 Keys of Excellence, which are valuable citizenship-building principles that support children in education and in essential life skills to bring about better behavior and stronger family relationships.

Lori Perez, Principal at Coastal Academy in Oceanside, has seen first hand how the 8 Keys of Excellence has transformed her school in three years. "We don't see students in our office for discipline issues anymore," says Perez. "We went from having a relatively small amount of students with problems to essentially none at all."

Perez also sees how supporting the program creates a better society. "One of the biggest things we tend to miss in education, is we get so worried about academics, that we forget what it is to be a good person," says Perez.

Inspiring children and adults to be exceptional people through music and education is what makes Freddie Ravel's keynote concert "Tune Up To Success" a perfect blend with the 8 Keys of Excellence. "Education is clearly our future," says Ravel, who supports LFI's efforts of reaching 50 million kids with the 8 Keys of Excellence by 2015.

Ravel, described as "The Motivational Maestro", will blend music styles of classical, rock, and hot salsa with mixed media to bring melody, harmony and rhythm in a transformational experience.

Tax-deductable tickets can be purchased at www.8keys.org/events.
