The new one-third mile segment of Melrose Drive, located at the northern city limits of Carlsbad opened to traffic early last month. The new segment completes a direct north-south route from Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad to state Route 78 in Vista.

"By opening this new section of Melrose Drive and connecting Vista and Carlsbad, we are providing more routes through this region, and improving traffic circulation and accessibility to nearby retail areas in Vista," City of Carlsbad Mayor Claude A. "Bud" Lewis said.

The new Melrose Drive connection between Palomar Airport Road and the southern Vista city limits is opening with three northbound and two southbound lanes because the ultimate improvements to the Palomar Airport Road and Melrose Drive intersection are not yet complete. Those improvements are expected to be complete in early 2007.

Mayor Lewis, the Carlsbad City Council, Public Works Director Glenn Pruim, the three developers who funded the project and other members of the project team and community gathered at the new segment of Melrose Drive to commemorate the opening.

The Melrose Drive connection represents an integral element of the City of Carlsbad's Growth Management Plan, approved by Carlsbad voters in 1986.

Three local developers, in addition to $3 million of federal funding, financed the $5.3 million construction of Melrose Drive. The developers will also be constructing business developments in the areas around the road.
