Just when you think you have figured out exactly everything the Carlsbad Chamber has to offer, you pick up the monthly issue of the Carlsbad Business Journal and find out something new.
The Chamber is a non-profit 501 (c) 6 organization, but the Carlsbad Chamber also has a separate 501 (c) 3 non-profit called Partners in Education Foundation or PIE.
The specific and primary purpose for which the foundation is formed is to engage in the solicitation, receipt and administration of property and moneys and — from time to time — to disburse such property and the income from, to, or for the benefit of educational programs serving the schools, businesses and communities in the City of Carlsbad, including but limited to the development and enhancement of economic educational opportunities, services and programs.
Through the Chamber's foundation, we are able to see that every Carlsbad 5th grade student attending school either in Carlsbad Unified School District or the Encinitas Union School District, has the opportunity to learn the life skills of entrepreneurship, work ethics and readiness, as well as financial literacy and good citizenship in their communities.
This program serves both teachers and students. Teachers must attend one-day training at BizTown and then provide their students with 25 hours of instruction to prepare them for the activities they will be involved in when they reach the simulated community of BizTown.
As a result of their experiences in BizTown, students will understand taxes, philanthropy and checkbook management. They are linked to various careers by applying for and securing those positions just as they would in the real world. They learn about running a business, working in specific careers, employees, customers and how to spend their hard-earned monies.
It's almost the end of 2010, so if you are looking for a charity that will serve the future of our community in workforce development and job creation, then please consider the Partners in Education Foundation.
