Michael Babowal brings government expertise to Chamber
Michael Babowal, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's new director of government affairs, comes to the Chamber after three successful years as a field representative with Assemblyman Alan Nakanishi in Lodi. Michael lived in Lodi and represented the Lodi, Stockton and Elk Grove areas.
Born and raised in San Jose, Michael is the younger of two children. Michael has both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in political science, and has a passion for politics. While in college, Michael hosted a late night radio show. He was asked to emcee a Hewlet-Packard company picnic and became a disc jockey to pay his way through college. After finishing his Bachelor's degree, he was a teacher for one year. While teaching, Michael was approached by a family friend to book a West Coast tour for a New York-based jazz band. Michael agreed and opened eMpTy Enterprises, a band management and booking agency. However, politics were his calling and he began volunteering on campaigns, which helped him land his job with Nakanishi.
Michael, who is a percussionist and sang in high school and college choirs, still loves music and is a huge Aerosmith fan. Of course, he is also a huge fan of his friends, the Lovin' Spoonful! Michael enjoys sports, especially the San Francisco Giants. He created and chaired two federal and state vs. city charity softball games, which raised several thousand dollars for Lodi and Stockton's Boys & Girls Clubs. While not working, playing or watching sports, or enjoying music, Michael likes to spend time with his gorgeous girlfriend Crystal. Crystal, who worked in the wine industry in Lodi, and Michael have collected over 60 bottles of wine and are always on the look out for a new bottle.
Although they will miss Lodi, their family and friends, Michael and Crystal are excited to move to Carlsbad and be a part of the community. Michael looks forward to working with local and state government officials as a business advocate for Chamber members.
