When Fred Hernandez started with Modern Postcard in 1998 as a junior marketer, the company had just moved into a newly built facility in Carlsbad. Although he left to pursue other career opportunities and finish his MBA, Fred always remembered the joy of helping businesses achieve their marketing goals.

"It was the most fun," he recalls.
In 2005, Fred happily rejoined Modern's team and is now the Director of Marketing. "The same thing I loved about the company back then is what I still love," he says. "What starts as just an idea can evolve into a successful business, and our company is positioned to help clients in this transformation."

Fred isn't the only one who loves what he does. This same passion is tangible when you walk through the door. From Robyn at the front desk to the people who operate the presses, design layouts and process lists, Modern's team is dedicated to providing guidance, value and support to their clients.

Since its humble beginnings in 1976, Modern Postcard has flourished. What was once a one-person dream of providing high quality printing is now a full-service printing, design, and direct mail marketing company housed in a state-of-the-art 75,000 square-foot facility. Yet Modern's guiding principle remains the same: to help businesses of all types and sizes succeed.

Modern Postcard benefits from an entrepreneurial spirit that is infused from the top down. Founders Steve Hoffman and Jim Toya-Brown are visionaries who apply creativity and unconventional thinking to best serve their clients. They value integrity and doing the right thing, from donating to local charities to undergoing rigorous annual certification audits for environmental sustainability (SFI/FSC).

Even though the company currently has over 150 employees, there is a small company mentality that makes Modern feel like family. Steve and Jim promote a sense of playfulness in the midst of determined efforts.

Company spirit runs rampant. The company recently held an in-house Olympics (toga-wearing, torch-carrying runner and all), where employees competed in tricycle races, stacked postcard relays, and a ping-pong ball toss, with medals going to the winners. Holiday parties, movie nights, and barbeques strengthen camaraderie. And a ping-pong table in the lunchroom provides break-time fun.

Although Modern Postcard offers a large array of creative, innovative, eye-catching products, the true value is in the service provided: the expertise to help companies of all sizes and types strategize, create and launch money-making direct mail marketing programs. The high quality printing, commitment to environmental sustainability, rapid turnaround, personalized service, quality checks and in-house operations simply support this service.

Unlike other printing companies that direct customers to order online, the folks at Modern Postcard prefer to personally help as many people as possible. In fact, each customer works with a dedicated representative and advocate with whom they can develop a working partnership that lasts a lifetime.

In a tough economy, the tendency is to cut marketing dollars. However, studies have shown that when the economy is poor it is even more important to market, and successful businesses invest in branding, customer retention and reaching out to new customers. The return on investment with direct mail is high. On average, for each dollar spent there is a $12 return, with postcards representing the most read direct mail shape (DMA Fact Book, 2010). Even a small business with a limited budget can benefit from well-executed direct mail campaigns.

Although Modern serves over 25,000 customers nationwide and prints over half a billion cards annually, "it is important that we are accessible to the surrounding community," Fred emphasizes. "Many local businesses don't even realize we're in their backyard. We want to reach out and have the opportunity to help local businesses succeed," he states.

To support the goal of partnering with local Carlsbad and San Diego businesses, Modern Postcard offers FREE on-site, one-day workshops that teach businesses the ins and outs of direct mail: data, lists, postal discounts, copy, graphics, testing and tracking. In March, Modern also held an open house and business networking event that was a huge success, over 150 local business people and business owners were in attendance. The company plans to hold several similar events in the near future
