After 15 years in Encinitas, Niels Norby decided to move his full-service trophy and awards store to Carlsbad so he could attain his goal of purchasing his own building.
Last November, San Dieguito Trophy opened at its new location off of Palomar Airport Road. The brand new building houses the company's beautiful showroom, as well as its offices and production area.
“Buying this building is my little American dream,” Norby said.
San Dieguito Trophy uses state-of-the-art technology to produce customized glass, crystal, marble and acrylic awards, plaques, vases and trophies. Customers can place their orders online and have their items shipped or they can visit the store to place or pick up their orders.
“I'm close enough that you can put your hands around my neck if I screw up, and I can fix it,” Norby said with a chuckle.
But all joking aside, Norby prides himself on his commitment to customer service. He's even been known to come in on Saturday, although he prefers not to since he's usually busy with the Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club, if a client forgets to pick up an order.
Customers who place orders online can e-mail the logos and text they want engraved on each piece. To ensure they are happy with the finished product, Norby e-mails all of his clients a proof and communicates with them throughout the entire process.
He doesn't charge any hidden fees; there is no set up charge or art charge for logos. Nearly all of the work, including the engraving, is done at the store as items are rarely sent out.
“I pride myself in putting out quality products. I don't sell substandard products just to make a buck,” Norby said. “For me, it's not always about making the most amount of money on an order; it's about making the order right.”
Norby offers products that range in price from a $10 acrylic paper weight to a $900 crystal vase. He can handle any size order, whether it's one item or hundreds of pieces.
The store offers a quick turnaround time of three to four days, but next day service is available if needed and there aren't any rush fees.
Norby's clients include Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill, Core Racing and Polo Ralph Lauren. He even produced the crystal awards for the Vivari Queen's Cup polo tournament, which are handed out by the Queen of England.
