Western Athletic Clubs (WAC), owner of the popular Pacific Athletic Club in Carmel Valley, has announced plans to build a new 100,000 square foot, full-service sports and fitness resort in Carlsbad. The private membership club will occupy the majority of a 16-acre site at the corner of El Camino Real and Palomar Airport Road, currently occupied by the Olympic Resort Hotel and Spa, a Carlsbad landmark since 1984. Development plans for the $25 million new “sports resort” are contingent upon the review and approval of the City of Carlsbad and the County of San Diego.

The club will feature extensive indoor and outdoor recreation and fitness facilities. The indoor facilities will include a 20,000 sq.ft. fitness center, dedicated studios for group exercise, yoga, Pilates and cycling, a regulation basketball gymnasium, luxurious locker rooms, extensive childcare facilities, a caf? and a full-service day spa. The outdoor facilities will include a major aquatics center and eight lighted tennis courts. The Club will also provide a broad range of family programs as well as the traditional adult activities commonly associated with quality sports clubs.

Western Athletic Clubs will own and operate its new sports resort, which has yet to be named. The new club will be the sister club of the Pacific Athletic Club in Carmel Valley, which WAC opened two years ago.

Jim Gerber, president of WAC, commented “We are excited about building a new sports resort in Carlsbad and look forward to becoming an integral part of the community.”

In addition to the new club, the site will feature an expansion and refurbishment of the existing hotel and the introduction of a new restaurant and conference center. Ted Vallas, owner of the Olympic Resort Hotel and Spa, has announced plans to construct 51 new suites and thereby expand the room count from the resort's present level of 79 to 130.

All components of the project are currently in the design stage. Permitting applications are scheduled to begin within a few months. Commencement of construction is slated for 2006, with the opening expected in 2007.
