Libraries support continuous learning that helps fuel today's economy with a well-educated and prepared workforce, according to Carlsbad City Library Director Heather Pizzuto.
In support of learning, Carlsbad City Library will open its third facility, the new Library Learning Center, this month. The 11,000-square-foot library was designed by award-winning architect Manuel Oncina and is located at 3368 Eureka Place, on the east side of Holiday Park.
“As the first permanent home for the Library's Centro de Informaci?n and Adult Learning Program, the Library Learning Center continues Carlsbad's legacy of learning,” Pizzuto said.
With deep roots in the community, the Carlsbad City Library system was established in 1956. To serve additional needs in literacy and information, the Adult Learning Program was established in 1984 and Centro de Informaci?n in 1991.
The Adult Learning Program has been a model for promoting literacy by providing free tutoring in basic reading, writing and computer skills, serving hundreds of adults since its founding.
The Centro de Informaci?n has provided library and information services, as well as programs in both English and Spanish, for thousands of people of all ages.
Nationwide, the importance of the literacy services provided by these programs has proven to be a key foundation for individuals' success in school and work.
“The reading, writing and computer skills fostered at the Library Learning Center will empower community members of all ages and promote family literacy,” Pizzuto said. “The positive result is greater academic achievement for students and increased economic benefits for workplaces and the community.”
Additionally, by providing public computers, Internet access and basic computer classes, the center will serve as the first point of entry for new technology users, fostering their confidence in skills necessary for today's workplace.
“The Library Learning Center will provide all of these top-quality services in the friendly, personalized manner that Carlsbad is known for,” Pizzuto said.
As with many library services, volunteer support has been a key to success.
Pizzuto said Carlsbad has always been known as a place where neighbors help neighbors, which is evident by the fact that since the Adult Learning Program's inception, volunteer tutors have provided services worth more than $3.5 million.
At Centro de Informaci?n, nearly 1,000 children over the past two years received free afterschool homework assistance thanks to generous community members contributing their time.
“With the opening of the Library Learning Center, we invite the community to become even more engaged in creating a well-informed and successful citizenry,” Pizzuto said.
The community is invited to attend the Library Learning Center grand opening from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23. Attendees will enjoy tours, music, refreshments, crafts and story times for children.
We welcome those who work, play and visit Carlsbad to meet their newest neighbor, the Library Learning Center.
