Effective July 1, 2012, our District implemented a creative reorganization of management personnel that keeps the leadership team intact, fills vacancies of departing principals and appoints a principal for Sage Creek High School, which is slated to welcome its initial freshman and sophomore classes in fall 2013.
These three site administrators are new to their positions, but have been with the district for many years and bring a wealth of experiences into the role.
Marjorie Giordani
After 17 years as an educator, Marjorie Giordani comes full circle as she takes the helm as principal at Poinsettia Elementary. She holds a multiple subject credential and has taught kindergarten, first and fifth grade, primarily at Vista Unified School District.
For the past five years, Giordani has served as assistant principal at Carlsbad High School. In this capacity, she had oversight of an array of programs, including guidance, master schedule, technology, library and textbooks. She was also the liaison for math and science, giving her a well-rounded skill set.
Before the 2011-12 school year ended, Principal Giordani had the opportunity to become acquainted with her new school community by meeting with staff and students, attending parent meetings and being interviewed by the exuberant student broadcast team.
"I am eager to continue Poinsettia's many great programs," Giordani said. "I plan to use my knowledge of the district's emphasis on college and career readiness to promote a college-going culture at Poinsettia."
Tom Bloomquist
Tom Bloomquist is moving just a short distance geographically from his former position as assistant principal at Carlsbad High to his new assignment as principal at Valley Middle. Although this is a change on many levels, Bloomquist is definitely up to the challenge of leading a school of younger adolescents.
After 22 years in education, Bloomquist has found that no matter what level one serves, students are students. Before joining CUSD in 2001, he was dean of academics at the Army and Navy Academy. His wide-ranging expertise will serve this school community quite well. Initially, Principal Bloomquist intends to do a lot of watching and learning. He indicated, "I look forward to building on Valley's many successes."
The Bloomquists are a Carlsbad Unified family. Tom Bloomquist's wife, Shauna, teaches kindergarten at Pacific Rim. Their son Troy is a 7th-grader at Aviara Oaks Middle; son Taylor is a junior at Carlsbad High.
C?sar Morales
Bequeathing his Viking helmet to Principal Bloomquist is C?sar Morales, who after six years as Valley's principal and assistant principal has been named the new principal of Sage Creek High. Before coming to Carlsbad, Principal Morales served as a teacher and coach in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Mr. Morales says his focus for Sage Creek is "to create a cohesive campus where everyone feels valued, from students and staff to parents and the community." He also will apply insights gleaned from earning a Master's degree at UCSD where he learned to view education from a student-centered perspective.
If you are wondering what the principal of a new high school does before school opens, the answer is … everything, from making sure the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and resources, to selecting a leadership team that will help design the course offerings around the school's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focus, to hiring teaching and support staff . Based upon research and student input, the Sage Creek Design Team will soon develop a school mascot and school colors.
Poised to Move Forward
Although many facets of the new high school remain under development, one element set in concrete is the fulfillment of a long-awaited reality for the Carlsbad community. We will have two stellar high schools that offer high-quality academics and enriching extra-curricular experiences.
When classes resume on August 29th, these new principals along with our entire CUSD team will be re-energized and ready to get the 2012-13 school year off to a positive start.
