On your mark, get set, go! The Carlsbad 5000 will make its 21st annual appearance this April. Voted as the Best Running Venue in the United States by Runner’s World Magazine, the Carlsbad 5000 will be held on Sunday, April 9. The Junior Carlsbad event for kids ages 12 and under, which is in its 17th year, will be held the day before, Saturday, April 8.
Carlsbad, renowned for its architectural planning, beautiful beaches and wonderful weather has now become a Southern California coastal favorite for families, retirees and fitness enthusiasts. The 3.1-mile scenic seaside course offers flat, fast terrain that provides competition for just about any age group or fitness level.
The Carlsbad 5000 begins with six different age group races for the general public before the event is opened up for the elite competition, world-class invitational runners. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in all age divisions, while the first 250 finishers will also receive medals for their top showing. New in 2006, every participant will also receive an Under Armour technical tee with entry.
For the elite runners, those who have built the event into the world’s fastest 5K, the grand prize is a purse totaling $70,000.
Junior Carlsbad will feature 10 different races for children ages 12 and under. Distances range from one-mile down to a quarter-mile and include the mom and dad pleaser 50-yard Toddler Trot and 25-yard Diaper Dash. Every child participant will receive a commemorative medal, a colorful t-shirt and a goodie bag. Students who participate in the School Championship, a competition based on participation, not speed, can win prizes from Legoland, Pat & Oscar’s and Chipotle. The winning school will earn a school visit by Chargers player Eric Parker.
In addition to the races, a free Health & Fitness Expo will take place that weekend from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 8 and 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 9. The Expo will be located on Roosevelt Street between Grand and Carlsbad Village Drive. Items to see, taste and sample include nutritional foods and supplements, workout gear and clothing and other health items.
