It is a pretty well known fact that Carlsbad is currently experiencing an unprecedented amount of expansion. However, many remain unaware of the vast amount of public art that is simultaneously produced with each developmental and construction project that occurs in Carlsbad.

The recent public art explosion that is occurring in Carlsbad is one of the more appealing byproducts resulting from the city's rapid growth and development. Since the Public Art Program was initiated in 1985 by Ordinance 1279, the city of Carlsbad has maintained a supportive role of public art with 1 percent of every capital improvement project's budget being dedicated to art. Therefore, the more Carlsbad continues to develop and redevelop, the more it is artistically enhanced.

"Public art enlivens Carlsbad" said Peter Gordon, cultural arts manager for the city of Carlsbad. "It increases the aesthetic environment, which thereby increases the quality of life, it a more attractive place to live and work."

Some of the newer pieces of artwork that residents can now admire include the sculptures gracing Aviara Park, the recently erected mosaic flowers at Barrio Carlsbad's Pine Avenue Park and the stepping-stone shaped benches along the new Coastal Rail Trail that spans from Oceanside to San Diego.

Despite all of the artwork that has already been installed throughout Carlsbad, a significant amount of art projects are still in the works. From the aquatic art that will one day adorn Carlsbad's new municipal swim complex to the 12-foot high silver archway planned for Hidden Canyon Park, a large portion of the art in Carlsbad is still in the design phase.

Though every piece of art is individual and appealing to each in its own way, all of the city's art, in one way or another reflects Carlsbad and its renowned quality of life. Whether it is the trio of bronze golf statues that will grace the Municipal Golf Course, or any one of the twenty-six, hand-painted fire hydrants embellishing the Village, each piece is an individual expression of life in Carlsbad.
