As I write this article, the Board of Directors, committee chairpersons and the top-level Chamber staff are preparing for our upcoming board retreat, where we plan to do a deep dive on current chamber operations.
Your chamber puts on more than 350 different events each year! Before we take on any new programs or try to implement any new ideas, we'll take a critical look at all the things we do today.
The questions we'll be asking include: Do the things we do today serve our mission? Are they beneficial and justifiable from a cost benefit standpoint? Once we fine tune our current operations, then we can begin to look more strategically at the future. One of our goals is to continually improve the value proposition of membership in the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.
Did you know that the Carlsbad Chamber is the second largest Chamber in the County and the 10th largest in the state? The Chamber has won many awards over the years in various categories including for our monthly publication the Carlsbad Business Journal, and for our web site as well as in other categories. Let us know how we can serve our members better.
At our retreat, we have invited the City Council to send a subcommittee to update the Chamber leadership on the status of the City and their goals and objectives. I believe ongoing and consistent dialogue with the city will help us plan for how the Chamber can be most effective for our members. We know that Carlsbad is the envy of many other cities. Carlsbad has a very stable and diversified tax base with revenues coming from retail sales tax, property tax, transient occupancy tax (TOT) and various cost recovery fees.
One of my goals is to make sure that the city consistently hears input from the Chamber as they prepare to meet the many challenges cities face in their day to day operations, strategic planning, crafting and revising ordinances and determining appropriate fees.
We also will hear from the Carlsbad Unified School District. The district is an important part of the fabric of the Carlsbad community. People want to live here and businesses want to locate here in part because we have good schools. We look forward to hearing their presentation.
I wish you all a great February. I hope you will join me at our Annual Business Awards Dinner on Feb. 28 at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. Annually attended by the who's-who in Carlsbad and the North County region, this year's theme is the "Spirit of the Twenties: Business is Roaring" and is not to be missed. Don't forget Valentine's Day. Consider buying gifts for your loved one from a Carlsbad Chamber member. Enjoy the President's Day weekend and I'll report back to you next month on the success of our retreat and what's happening for March.
