Interview with Sarah Znerold, president and CEO of SZPR, Inc.

About SZPR:
SZPR, Inc. is an award-winning national boutique public relations and marketing agency recognized for producing creative, distinctive campaigns. We inspire fresh ideas that break through the clutter to get exposure for companies in diverse industries. SZPR takes a personalized approach to strategic planning, media and analyst relations, editorial services and special events.

What is your professional background?
I have a degree in communications and marketing from the University of Denver.

When did you found SZPR and why?
I started the agency in 2002 from the bedroom of my small apartment. It took a combination of passion and determination, but I am a big believer in following your dreams. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience so far.

What are your duties or responsibilities at SZPR?
I oversee client management, financial operations, human resources, new business and the day-to-day aspects of our fast-paced public relations firm. Our clients span the entertainment, nonprofit, consumer, hospitality and technology industries.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
So much to do, so little time!

What do you enjoy most about your position?
Coming up with a big idea and bringing it to fruition, the adrenaline rush of landing a highly sought after media opportunity.

What is your greatest accomplishment in business?
Building a solid portfolio of brand name clients including Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream, Hilton Hotels, Skinsational Spa, San Diego Restaurant Week and many more.

What is unique about your company?
We create fresh and insightful public relations campaigns that help clients successfully stand out in a cluttered marketplace. We leverage our close relationships with the nation's top television, radio and print editors to ensure that our clients' messages leave a lasting impression on the minds of their target audiences.

Any awards/honors you have received?
I was recently named “Best Young Entrepreneur” by the Stevie Women in Business Awards, which was very exciting. I was also honored as one of 944 Magazine's “Movers and Shakers Under 30,” one of The San Diego Metropolitan's Top 40 Under 40, as well as the YWCA's 2005 Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) award.

Where do you see SZPR in five or ten years?
The opportunities are limitless, I envision we will continue to stay ahead of the trends, partner with industry leaders and create a work environment that fosters creativity and helps talented PR professionals fulfill their goals.

How many employees are at your Carlsbad location?
Twelve employees work from our Carlsbad office. We also have satellite locations in Boston and Hawaii.

What do you do in your time away from work?
I enjoy spending time with my cockatoo, Nube, wine tasting and lots of traveling. I am heading to New Zealand next month for a much-needed vacation.
