The United States launch of SeaShell Awnings USA Inc., an Australian-born product line of self-retractable shade products, took place Aug. 14.
The new Carlsbad-based company offers viable solutions to the growing demand for energy-efficient building technologies and sustainable outdoor living. Its facility, 3216 Grey Hawk Court, serves as the headquarters for the manufacturing and distribution of the exterior shade products.
The awnings create shaded outdoor living areas that reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for residents and businesses alike. SeaShell Awnings can reduce monthly energy bills by 25 percent in heating and cooling costs.
“We all need to consider how to lower our monthly heating and cooling costs,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. “SeaShell Awnings USA does just that, and they will stimulate the local economy with more full-time job opportunities.”
The company is expected to create as many as 300 full-time jobs by 2010. As demand for SeaShell Awnings grows, it will generate new revenue for the local economy.
The local company is the result of the collaborative effort of Solatube Global Marketing Founder John Hanley and Ken Gale, founder of the Australian-based SeaShell Awnings. For more than 20 years, Hanley has revolutionized the residential and commercial markets by illuminating interior spaces with Solatubes, which capture sunlight on a rooftop and redirect it indoors.
“SeaShell Awnings is the next wave of green building innovation,” Hanley said. “The aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly design will not only revitalize the green building practices in San Diego, but redefine outdoor living.”
The frames of the awnings are made out of recycled aluminum and each unit self-retracts when faced with 30 to 35 knot winds. The radial shape reduces direct solar heat gain through windows, which reduces cooling costs.
