Del Mar may have its races, but come the first Sunday in May, Carlsbad has its day in the sun when more than 100,000 savvy shoppers grab their bags and head for the Carlsbad Village Street Faire.
Downtown Carlsbad's normally laidback avenues come alive with activity and the sights and smells of fair-time as vendors set up booths, and shoppers search for bargains, gifts and out-of-doors fun in the sun. The largest one-day street fair in the nation (our major sponsor is the North County Times) returns to Carlsbad from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 1.
Thirsty shoppers need not fear — the Carlsbad Rotary Club is more than ready to step up to the challenge. The Faire's first ever Beer Garden will be erected on the corner of Roosevelt and Grand, where Stone Brewing Co.'s ales and porters will be served amid the chimes of good-time music by the Langen Brothers (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and passionate Irish/Flamenco/Turkish fusion by Skelpin' (1:30 to 4 p.m.).
The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce event is expected to draw more than 100,000 visitors with its more than 900 unique vendor booths offering handcrafted arts and gifts, funnel cakes, kettlecorn, valuable antiques, gourmet food, exquisite jewelry, exotic clothing, items from around the world, and more. Children's rides, an international food center, plus an old-fashioned pancake breakfast, all offer a number of ways that the whole family can find something to enjoy.
Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Ted Owen say the reason so many shoppers look forward to the Carlsbad Village Faire is simple.
“We are the largest for only one reason, we have the highest quality vendors, and people know they can come back every year and find topnotch items to purchase,” Owen said. “Having 800-900 vendors combined with a wide variety of consumer goods makes us the No. 1 street fair in the nation!”
Parking is limited, so visitors are encouraged to use the complimentary shuttles that run to and from the fair every 15 minutes. Shuttle pick-up locations are at the southwest corner of Sears at the Westfield Shoppingtown Plaza Camino Real (Highway 78 and Jefferson), as well as at the Poinsettia Coaster Station Poinsettia exit off of I-5).
