“I'm not sleeping” is a common complaint from clients in my clinic. Some people want help getting to sleep and some want help with a dependence on sleeping pills. They report being tired, moody, irritable, stiff muscles, headaches, and inability to think or function normally. Sleep issues involve:
• Difficulty falling asleep
• Easily disrupted sleep
• Difficulty returning to sleep
• Waking up too early in the morning
• Not feeling refreshed upon waking and feeling tired throughout the day
Problems resulting from lack of sleep:
• Poor function and decision making
• Increased mistakes and errors
• Lack of focus and sustained concentration
• Decreased motivation
• Impatience, irritability and overall mood swings
• Poor relationships with family, friends and co-workers
Traditional Chinese Medicine can be very effective for most people suffering from sleep-related problems. Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have different approaches to insomnia. TCM treats insomnia by assessing different patterns and viewing each individual's circumstance differently, as opposed to employing a widely applied prescription for sleeping pills. Chinese medicine sees insomnia as a symptom of imbalance in either the fundamental substances of the body (Chi, Blood, Yin, Yang, Shen), or of the major organ systems (Lungs, Heart, Spleen, Liver, Kidneys). TCM endeavors to get to the root of the problem.
Everyone wants to sleep well and have sweet dreams every night. Nobody wants insomnia, but some people have been suffering with it for a long time. In my practice, patients come in with these complaints every day: “I've only slept a couple of hours a night for 10 years,” or “I've had trouble sleeping for 30 years since the death of my spouse.” Others report, “I have been taking sleeping pills for years. It all started when our company dissolved,” or “I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and my doctor said my aches and pains are related to my sleeping disorder. Can you do anything?”
So, for me, the individual approach is most effective. I talk with the patient at length and determine the pattern of dysfunction then begin treatment. Acupuncture and herbal formulas are combined for quickest results.
Benefits of a consistent good sleep are:
• Learning and memory improvement, brain functions better
• Metabolism and weight, irregular sleep may cause weight gain by affecting the way the body processes carbohydrates and certain hormones related to appetite
• Safety, being alert and attentive, especially while driving a car
• Improved Mood, irritability and impatience is improved
When treating insomnia, acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas can be combined for the quickest and most effective results. Not every insomnia patient will be treated with the same herbs or acupuncture points. If you suffer from these symptoms and/or a sleep disorder, consider Traditional Chinese Medicine.
