Have you seen this strange block in the newspaper or on a sign or on a flyer? It's called a QR Code, and it's a two-dimensional code readable by your smartphone or by your camera-equipped mobile phone. The code can contain text, product information, music, a link to video, a URL or other data. QR stands for Quick Response because that's what was needed when the Code system was invented by a subsidiary of Toyota for use in the auto parts inventory process.
A user can download a reader for his or her phone and snap a photo of the QR Code. The reader will scan the image to display text, contact information, data, or open a Web page on the phone's screen. Some phones come equipped with QR Code readers. If it's not included on your phone there are plenty of readers available for downloading. Go ahead, snap the QR Code above, and see where it takes you!
Here are two readers that are popular, but there are plenty more that you can find on the Internet (make sure to check the compatibility with your phone):
BeeTagg
— Visit http://get.beetagg.com and follow the instructions. You can also send a SMS with text BEE to +44 762 480 24 86 and they will send you a SMS back with a link to the reader.
KAYWA Reader
— You can download KAYWA directly to your mobile phone by visiting http://reader.kaywa.com. Kaywa will then check to see if your mobile phone is compatible with their software.
The reader sites will also enable you to create a QR Code so you can use the code on your Web site, on your business card, in your store window, on your flyers, posters, invites, on your car and on your products. How about wearing a T-shirt with a QR Code that links to your Web site? If you include your contact information on your business card QR Code, some smart phones will take the scanned QR Code information and add it to its contact list with just a click of a button. You can use a QR Code to offer a discount to people who scan your Code. Have testimonials? Put a QR Code decal in your store window with the link going to your testimonials. Because the use of QR Codes in the United States is still relatively new, you may want to post instructions next to your store window decal. Check the Internet for other uses and use your imagination to come up with new uses. Let us know your ideas on how you use QR Codes.
