The city of Carlsbad has taken steps to establish a sustainable technology business incubator early next year and will partner with an organization to run the facility.
Recently, the city accepted proposals from groups interested in financing, designing and managing the program. The city is planning to award the contract by the end of the year.
When complete, the technology business incubator will function as a public-private partnership in which the city provides the project facility and the contracted organization will develop the program and look for opportunities for public and private grants to provide funding. Potential partner organizations could include universities, community colleges and trade associations.
“The city is dedicated to helping local, environmentally-friendly companies through a business partnership in our community,” said Cynthia Haas, Carlsbad's deputy city manager. “The sustainable business incubator program will give entrepreneurs the information and support they need to grow a business, and, hopefully, contribute to the city's economy by growing the business in Carlsbad.”
Focusing on clean, green and renewable resources, the approximately 6,000-square-foot business incubator will be located at a city-owned property at 2351 Faraday Ave. It will serve as a place for entrepreneurs to develop sustainable technologies and will provide support and access to resources and information, such as education, contacts and capital, that might otherwise be inaccessible to them.
Once a business receives enough support and resources for the research and development portion of its project, the company will generally graduate from the program. When this happens, there is space for a new business to start the process all over again.
The program furthers the city's commitment to growing the local economy through partnerships with the local business community, as well as advancing sustainable technology in the community. Encouraging sustainable businesses was a key theme to emerge from Envision Carlsbad, a city-sponsored program that invites community members to work together to create a vision and a plan for Carlsbad's future.
