This is the time of year I enjoy most. No, it's not because of time off of work to spend with friends and family or because this is the only time of year that I savor the taste of fresh baked turkey.
Presents are nice, and so is the festive feeling of ringing out the old and welcoming in the New Year. But what really makes the season worth its weight in bubbly, presents and confetti are the consumer travel shows that begin shortly after all of the decorations are stashed and the diets begin.
The Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau has locked-in to three super shows that have proven, year after year, to be the top shelf of consumer travel shows on the West Coast. As in previous years, the bureau will have partnership opportunities for local hotels, making participation in these shows more affordable to those who offer lodging.
With the current economic conditions, saving a few bucks and getting under the big tent can make good budget sense, especially now.
The first of these three shows kicks off with the 7th Annual Bay Area Travel Show Jan. 24-25 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The bureau has been with this show since it first began in San Francisco.
A growing list of sponsors, including the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, KGO, AAA Travel and Lonely Planet publications, have helped increase public attendance, which translates into more prospective visitors shopping for their next destination getaway.
The Los Angeles Times Travel & Adventure Show, which clearly reigns supreme as the West Coast's largest consumer travel show, welcomes the public and the travel trade at a new venue the weekend of Feb. 14-15. The popularity of this show outgrew what Long Beach could provide, so guests and exhibitors will meet at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The public, which is basically all of Southern California, flocks to this show, with attendance this year nearing 15,000. Seminars, entertainment, travel deals and the opportunity to build the travel dream are what keep everyone coming back to this stalwart of shows.
Completing the bureau's show lineup the weekend of February 21-22 will be the 3rd Annual Arizona Travel Show. What makes this show one of the most spectacular is the location at the University of Phoenix Stadium, home to the Arizona Cardinals.
I'm always moved by the statue of Pat Tillman that welcomes fans to the stadium, reminding them of happier times before the war. Once a season ticket holder for the Cardinals, I remember well the thrill of watching Pat work his craft, we miss you Pat!
The first year this show opened was the same year the newest NFL stadium welcomed play away from ASU's Sun Devil Stadium. Curiosity, for both the stadium and Glendale's first travel show, helped to make this show a first-year success.
The Arizona Republic has teamed up with the promoters, Travel Industry Shows, to guarantee media and marketing support throughout the greater Phoenix area. After all, what do we enjoy seeing the most in the summer months? Zonie plates!
The bureau has enjoyed the partnership and support of many local hotels and it looks like a great team effort will again emerge to showcase the best of what Carlsbad has to offer. As always, we thank those who have joined us and welcome your continued support.
